License suspension & reinstatement after a DUI: the fees and the checklist

A DUI suspends your license twice over in most states — an administrative suspension from the arrest (especially after a refusal) and a court suspension from the conviction. Reinstatement is where the costs collect: the fee below, plus every condition the state attaches to it.

The reinstatement fee

31 states publish a single statewide reinstatement fee we could verify from an official source. Where the table has no row for your state, the fee is set inside a schedule we could not confirm, split across several charges, or collected by a different agency — your state guide explains which. A "reinstatement fee" is paid to the driver-licensing agency, separate from court costs.

The reinstatement checklist (what else it takes)

  1. Serve the suspension period — the administrative and court periods may run at the same time or back to back; your state guide states the periods.
  2. Complete the ordered DUI education or treatment program and file the certificate — program fees are in the classes guide.
  3. Have your insurer file the SR-22 where your state requires one — see the SR-22 guide.
  4. Install the ignition interlock where the order requires it before driving — see the interlock guide.
  5. Pay the reinstatement fee and any duplicate-license fee, and clear any other holds (unpaid fines restart nothing — they block everything).

Driving on a suspended license is a separate criminal charge in every state, with its own fines and a longer suspension. Nothing on this page is a workaround — it is the official route back, in the order the agencies apply it.
