How much does a OWI cost in Michigan?

A first OWI in Michigan carries a statutory fine of $100–$500. This guide stacks every cost layer an official Michigan source prices — the fine, court costs, the license reinstatement fee, the OWI program, ignition interlock, and the SR-22 insurance filing — and says plainly which layers no official source prices at all.

Michigan OWI costs at a glanceFigure
Statutory fine — first OWIA first OWI offense carries a fine of $100 to $500. If the driver's alcohol content was 0.17 or higher, the enhanced high-BAC fine is $200 to $700.
Statutory fine — second OWIThe statute separates a second offense: $200–$1,000. Second offenses also carry longer suspensions and program requirements — see the sections below.
Court costs & feesUnder MCL 257.625(13), the court may also order the person to pay the costs of the prosecution. Those costs are set case by case and no statewide figure is published.
License suspension — first offenseThe Secretary of State suspends the license for 180 days for a first OWI with no prior convictions within seven years, and a restricted license may be issued after the first 30 days. A high-BAC (0.17 or higher) first offense brings a one-year suspension, with a restricted license possible after 45 days.
License reinstatement feeMCL 257.320e sets a reinstatement fee of $125, paid to the Secretary of State before the license is issued or returned. Portions of the fee are allocated to drunk driving prevention equipment and training and to a drunk driving caseflow assistance fund.
Ignition interlockConditional — restricted license / court order — An interlock is not mandatory for every first offender. The court may order one as a condition of probation under MCL 257.625(24), and one must be ordered if a restricted license is issued after a high-BAC conviction. The driver pays the device costs; no official price is published.
OWI education / treatment programMichigan has no single statewide DUI education program with a fee published in the official sources reviewed. Courts may order substance use assessment or treatment as part of a sentence or probation in individual cases.
SR-22 insurance filingNo SR-22 filing requirement was stated in the official Michigan sources reviewed, so it is recorded as unverified. A conviction generally leads insurers to treat a driver as higher risk, which can raise premiums; no official source states a dollar figure.

The fine

A first OWI offense carries a fine of $100 to $500. If the driver's alcohol content was 0.17 or higher, the enhanced high-BAC fine is $200 to $700.

Court costs & fees

Under MCL 257.625(13), the court may also order the person to pay the costs of the prosecution. Those costs are set case by case and no statewide figure is published.

License suspension & reinstatement

The Secretary of State suspends the license for 180 days for a first OWI with no prior convictions within seven years, and a restricted license may be issued after the first 30 days. A high-BAC (0.17 or higher) first offense brings a one-year suspension, with a restricted license possible after 45 days.

MCL 257.320e sets a reinstatement fee of $125, paid to the Secretary of State before the license is issued or returned. Portions of the fee are allocated to drunk driving prevention equipment and training and to a drunk driving caseflow assistance fund.

The national picture — which states charge the most to reinstate — is in our license reinstatement guide.

Ignition interlock

An interlock is not mandatory for every first offender. The court may order one as a condition of probation under MCL 257.625(24), and one must be ordered if a restricted license is issued after a high-BAC conviction. The driver pays the device costs; no official price is published.

How interlock pricing works (installation, monthly lease, calibration, removal) is in our ignition interlock cost guide.

OWI education & treatment program

Michigan has no single statewide DUI education program with a fee published in the official sources reviewed. Courts may order substance use assessment or treatment as part of a sentence or probation in individual cases.

SR-22 & insurance

No SR-22 filing requirement was stated in the official Michigan sources reviewed, so it is recorded as unverified. A conviction generally leads insurers to treat a driver as higher risk, which can raise premiums; no official source states a dollar figure.

What an SR-22 is, which states charge a filing fee, and how long it must be carried: SR-22 cost guide.

Towing, impound & other charges

For a first offense the court may order vehicle immobilization for up to 180 days, and an OWI conviction adds six points to the driver's record.

Worked total: the verified charges stacked

ItemCost
Statutory fine$100–$500
License reinstatement fee$125
Total of the verified state-set charges above$225–$625

That total is deliberately incomplete: it leaves out everything no official Michigan source prices statewide — court costs where they are set county by county, interlock lease payments to a private vendor, towing and storage, and the insurance increase that follows an SR-22. Add your own figures for those in the cost calculator.
